Katrina: How You Can Help
We’ve all seen the stunning images and heard the terrible stories from the Gulf Coast region in the aftermath of Hurricane Katrina. The thoughts and prayers of our nation are with all of our brothers and sisters who have lost so much in this disaster—homes, businesses and, most painfully, family members.I spent more than 25 years in Congress representing parts of Louisiana affected by the storm; my family still calls it home. With each new day, I absorb the pictures and stories, mindful of the people struggling to cope with the disaster and the emergency personnel and volunteers tirelessly working to save as many lives as they can.
In this difficult time for America, many are asking, “What can I do to help?” The answer is simple: Every person, no matter how rich, poor, young or old, and every corporation, service club and business group can contribute to emergency relief and rebuilding efforts. During troubled times, those of us spared from tragedy rightly count our blessings. And as we give thanks we must also give of ourselves.
Stories abound of even the youngest Americans wanting to help. I have heard of children setting up lemonade stands and even collecting coins to help the hurricane survivors. These little ones understand what we sometimes forget when faced with such an overwhelming tragedy: Even the smallest bit of pocket change will make an enormous difference when combined with the multitude of tiny efforts springing up throughout the country.
And those who can contribute more must spring into action as well.
Many companies are matching employee donations to relief efforts—if your company is doing this, please take advantage of this opportunity and give as generously as you can. If your company isn’t, why not make the suggestion or lead the effort?
American businesses have a special responsibility to contribute to the relief and rebuilding efforts—product donations and employee volunteer efforts are vitally important. So, too, is providing funds to important organizations like the Red Cross (www.redcross.org or 1-800-HELP-NOW/1-800-257-7575 Spanish) and the Bush-Clinton Katrina Fund www.bushclintonkatrinafund.org or 1-212-348-0360).
I am also grateful that so many corporations have stepped up to offer a helping hand, and I’m proud to say that member companies of the Pharmaceutical Research and Manufacturers of America (PhRMA) have already contributed nearly $45 million in needed prescription medicines, medical supplies, baby formula, other important healthcare products and cash assistance.
Beyond this immediate relief, however, lies the daunting task of rebuilding and restoring the Gulf Coast. Both will require continued support long into the future. Together, with our prayers, time and contributions, we can rebuild this storm-ravaged region and restore hope to those who have lost so much.
