It’s Valentine’s Day, Have a Heart

It’s no coincidence that February is American Heart Month and host to Valentine’s Day, and as a result, there is no better time to focus on your heart.

Heart disease is the leading cause of death for both men and women in the U.S., affecting more than 83 million Americans. Thankfully, significant progress has been made so that the only reason your heart skips a beat is because you’re spending time with the special people in your life. Fatality rates between 2001 and 2011 dropped 30%, thanks in large part to new medicines. With more than 200 medicines in development, the biopharmaceutical industry is working hard to further fight cardiovascular disease and control health care costs.

While medicines have helped address this devastating disease, there are also preventative measures you can take to ensure you and your loved ones enjoy Valentine’s Day for years to come. This includes:

  1. Eating a healthy diet of fruits, vegetables and less saturated fats and cholesterol
  2. Exercising regularly. At least 30 minutes a day
  3. Monitoring your blood pressure
  4. Limiting alcohol use and quitting smoking
