Coming Together to Address a National Problem: STEM Education

A recent article in Information Week authored by Robert Atkinson, President of the Information Technology and Innovation Foundation, makes an interesting argument about why innovation-focused industries, such as the biopharmaceutical sector, should come together on issues of innovation in order to maintain U.S. competitiveness. He points to elements of common interest, such as sustained funding for R&D, robust science, technology, engineering and mathematics (STEM education) to create a highly-skilled workforce, and strong intellectual property protections.

While these all play a pivotal role in the discovery and development of innovative new medicines, Atkinson’s mention of STEM is particularly timely. Alarmingly, U.S. rankings on key STEM measures have fallen precipitously in recent years. As an industry driven by science, the U.S. biopharmaceutical sector is dependent on a base of highly-skilled STEM workers.

Here at PhRMA – and throughout our member companies – we agree that we must do more as a nation to bolster the 21st century workforce. It is critical that we encourage more young Americans to pursue STEM careers in order to sustain medical progress and bring innovative treatments and cures to patients who need them. That’s why we’re partnering with U.S. News and World Report to gather a group of STEM advocates for a discussion about industry-supported STEM initiatives and opportunities to build upon them, together.

The event, to be held January 22nd (9:00am-12:15pm) at the National Press Building in DC, will include the release of a new Battelle report detailing biopharmaceutical industry efforts to improve STEM education at the local, state and federal levels.
