PhRMA Statement on New National Advertising Campaign

Washington, D.C. (November 14, 2008) — Pharmaceutical Research and Manufacturers of America (PhRMA) President and CEO Billy Tauzin issued the following statement today:

“Starting Monday, PhRMA will launch a new advertising campaign pointing out the devastating impact that chronic diseases, such as cancer, diabetes and heart disease, have on patients and their families, as well as the burden of the costs of these diseases on health care in America.

“The 30-second commercial, which features award-winning talk show host and Partnership for Prescription Assistance (PPA) spokesman Montel Williams, highlights how early diagnosis and preventative treatment can save lives and lower healthcare costs – and that’s why everyone in America should have affordable health insurance.

“The commercial also emphasizes that until that day comes, America’s pharmaceutical research companies renew their commitment to help uninsured and struggling patients through patient assistance programs and the PPA. “This new advertising campaign is part of PhRMA’s efforts to help expand access to healthcare coverage and improve the affordability, value and quality of health care in the United States.

“PhRMA recently unveiled its Platform for a Healthy America, which includes comprehensive and meaningful proposals that can help reduce costs and enhance the quality of care for American patients. The platform supports a dual approach that focuses on expanding private health insurance while improving access to public programs, such as Medicaid and SCHIP.
