The Biopharmaceutical Sector’s Impact on the Economy of Kansas
This fact sheet presents an analysis of the impact of the biopharmaceutical sector on the economy of Kansas (KS) in 2008, including data on employment, economic output, and research and development activity. The biopharmaceutical sector’s economic impact includes not only the direct impact of its companies, but also the ripple effects that the sector has throughout the rest of the economy. These ripple effects include both the indirect impact, the economic value of the goods or services used to support biopharmaceutical companies, and the induced impact, the value of the economic activity supported by the spending of the direct and indirect employees of the biopharmaceutical sector.
Additional Information on the Biopharmaceutical Sector’s Impact in Kansas:
PhRMA commissioned Battelle to conduct this study to examine the extent to which state governments are targeting the industry for economic growth and development:
- Bioscience is one of five industry clusters targeted for development in Kansas’ state economic development strategic plan
- The Kansas Bioscience Authority is a $581 million initiative created by the Kansas Economic Growth Act of 2004 and funded, in part, by state income-tax withholdings generated by bioscience companies
- The Kansas City Area Life Sciences Institute (KCALSI), a collaboration of public and private organizations in both Kansas City, Kansas, and Kansas City, Missouri, has played a key leadership role in helping to secure publicprivate investments to build the region’s bioscience development R&D and commercialization assets
