Foundation CenterA report released by the Foundation Center found that six of the top 25 U.S. corporate foundations that gave the most in philanthropic donations are PhRMA member companies. Of particular significance is the fact that 14 pharmaceutical foundations examined in the report provided $3.7 billion in in-kind donations in 2009.

There is no doubt that this is a testament to the incredible commitment of this industry to helping patients who are facing financial hardships access the medicines they need to lead fuller, healthier lives.

And it is also a sign that the weak economy is not impacting corporate philanthropic giving, particularly among the pharmaceutical sector. In fact, the Foundation Center stated that despite the severity of the economic downturn, corporate foundation giving remains at its highest level on record.

This is yet another reason why I am proud to work for one of the most innovative industries in the U.S. Not only are we innovators of breakthrough medicines that improve patient health, we are also at the top of the charts when it comes to charitable donations.
