Washington, D.C. (February 13, 2009) — Pharmaceutical Research and Manufacturers of America (PhRMA) President and CEO Billy Tauzin issued the following statement today regarding an ad campaign about the State Children’s Health Insurance Program (SCHIP):
“PhRMA is pleased to join Families USA, the American Cancer Society Cancer Action Network and the Service Employees International Union in showing our gratitude to Members of Congress who played an instrumental role in the passage of the State Children’s Health Insurance Program Reauthorization Act of 2009.
“Through their dedication to the bill, these Members helped to maintain coverage to the more than 7 million children who were enrolled in the last year alone – and to extend that coverage to the 4.1 million additional individuals who will be helped through expansion of the program.
“Because of this, PhRMA and our partners are undertaking an ad campaign to thank these Members and to remind all Americans that SCHIP is just one step toward meeting our ultimate shared goal of comprehensive health care reform that will provide access to coverage for all Americans.
“This collaboration is especially important because it emphasizes the broad support for comprehensive health care reform. We may always have differences of opinion, but we strongly agree that health care reform is a shared priority.
“Since 1997, SCHIP has helped millions of uninsured, low-income children and their families by providing access to high-quality health coverage and, with it, peace of mind. It has long been a vital resource for children and families across America – and that is why PhRMA has long supported reauthorization of SCHIP.
“Still, millions of Americans face the challenge of being uninsured. By working with a variety of partners to raise awareness of programs like SCHIP and of the need for health care reform, we hope to move closer to our goal of making high-quality, comprehensive health coverage available to all Americans.”
