Preventing Abuse To Foster Better Health

Earlier this week, a joint plan was outlined by the Office of National Drug Control Policy (ONDCP), the Drug Enforcement Administration (DEA) and the Food and Drug Administration (FDA), where key strategies were developed that address preventing prescription drug abuse nationwide. A full outline of the plan can be found here.

For years, PhRMA has worked to help prevent prescription drug abuse and misuse using several multi-dimensional tools we developed along with other partners, such as the SMARxT Disposal Program, as well as the promotion of DEA National Take Back Day and other community-focused education and awareness efforts. Why? Because we know how important it is.

In his statement on the joint plan, PhRMA President and CEO John J. Castellani said: "When used appropriately, prescription medications can help millions of Americans live longer, healthier lives. But for many, the misuse and abuse of prescription medicines is a growing problem. The prescription drug abuse strategy released by ONDCP focuses on critical aspects of this issue. We look forward to working with ONDCP and other key stakeholders on preventing prescription drug abuse, particularly among youth."

PhRMA's website has several great educational tools and resources for parents, teachers and health care providers on the dangers of prescription drug abuse and misuse. Check them out here.
