Reports of Measles on the Rise in Europe

An interesting report from the World Health Organization found that cases of measles are on the rise across Europe. According to Rebecca Martin of the WHO, a major cause for the increase is that parents are failing to get their children vaccinated.

Sadly, this is one of those cases where many in society have too short a memory. The scourge of outbreaks of preventable infections like measles, polio and small pox in many places around the world were not long ago, yet some have forgotten the devastation, pain and suffering that these conditions inflicted on victims and their families.

Fortunately, biopharmaceutical research companies are working on nearly 400 new vaccines and medicines to fight a variety of infectious diseases. That?s great news but we should also all remember the terrible toll that infectious diseases have taken in the past ? especially on children.
