Spring Clean the Medicine Cabinets - Tomorrow is National Take Back Day

As I put final touches on my weekend plans, I wanted to flag Saturday for folks - it's the Drug Enforcement Administration (DEA) National Take Back Day. Scope out your medicine cabinets and if you have unwanted or expired prescription medicines, consider swinging by a drop off location near you from 10:00 a.m. to 2:00 p.m. It's free and anonymous. And it's a small action that can be an immense help in the combat against prescription drug abuse. Just consider that most abusers are finding their stashes from family and friends.DEA National Take Back Day

I've shared previously about the toll of prescription drug abuse in my home town in Kentucky and the epidemic isn't unique to my community. It's an alarming national problem. To fight it, PhRMA continues to spread its support of programs that educate the public about the proper use and disposal of prescription medicines, such as SMARxT Disposal. Just a few weeks ago we announced an exciting collaboration with the Partnership at Drugfree.org in "Wake Up to Medicine Abuse," a first-of-its kind initiative that will take place in September. And the FDA is also taking steps to address the problem.

There's a role for all of us and so I hope you can take some time to Spring clean the medicine cabinets and drop off your medicines during the National Take Back Day. And if you can't make it on Saturday, no problem. You can always safely dispose of your medicines through your household trash - just follow these simple steps.
