WASHINGTON (July 7, 2015) — Today, the Pharmaceutical Research and Manufacturers of America (PhRMA) Foundation announced the promotion of Eileen Cannon to president of its Foundation.
“On behalf of our member companies and staff, I’d like to congratulate Eileen on her well-deserved promotion to president of the PhRMA Foundation,” said John J. Castellani, president and chief executive officer, PhRMA. “Over the past 15 years, Eileen’s leadership has been instrumental in helping to connect promising young researchers to resources that not only help launch their careers, but also help to advance critical new science that contributes to the drug discovery process for patients.”
This year, the Foundation is celebrating its 50th anniversary and its continued tradition of fostering the development of highly-trained, top-quality scientists to help address the growing needs of stakeholders in the biopharmaceutical sector, including scientific and academic institutions, government and the biopharmaceutical industry. Having funded the research of more than 2,200 young scientists, the Foundation continues its important contribution to the future of care for patients in both the United States and abroad.
Cannon has played a central role in the Foundation’s expansion during her tenure. Over the last several years, she has been instrumental in helping to implement new initiatives in regulatory science, comparative effectiveness research, translational medicine and safe and effective prescribing.
Cannon’s leadership has also contributed to the development of new partnerships with national scientific organizations and government agencies, such as the National Institute of Health and the Foundation of the National Institute of Health. This collaboration has led to the creation of education initiatives that are critical to biopharmaceutical research and development, practicing physicians and patients.
Since it was founded, the PhRMA Foundation has become a nationally known and highly respected program among the academic community. With nearly 40 new individual fellowships and grants available yearly, the Foundation awards more than $3.3 million per year in annual grants to emerging researchers with support from PhRMA’s member companies.
