WASHINGTON, D.C. (April 30, 2013) – Pharmaceutical Research and Manufacturers of America (PhRMA) Senior Vice President Matt Bennett issued the following statement today:
“The biopharmaceutical industry is firmly committed to enhancing the public health through responsible reporting and publication of clinical research and safety information. Companies publish their research, collaborate with academic researchers, and disclose clinical trial information at the time of patient registration, drug approval, and for medicines whose research programs have been discontinued.
Biopharmaceutical companies support responsible data sharing that protects patient privacy, maintains the integrity of the regulatory review process, and preserves incentives for biomedical research. Unfortunately, the EMA's current and proposed policies fail to respect these principles. Companies are committed to working with multi-stakeholder groups such as the National Academy of Sciences Institute of Medicine and Harvard University's Multi-Regional Clinical Trials Center to facilitate responsible data sharing that benefits patients."
The Pharmaceutical Research and Manufacturers of America (PhRMA) represents the country’s leading innovative biopharmaceutical research and biotechnology companies, which are devoted to discovering and developing medicines that enable patients to live longer, healthier, and more productive lives. Since 2000, PhRMA member companies have invested approximately $550 billion in the search for new treatments and cures, including an estimated $48.5 billion in 2012 alone.
