Washington, D.C. (January 8, 2009) — Pharmaceutical Research and Manufacturers of America (PhRMA) President and CEO Billy Tauzin issued the following statement today regarding PhRMA’s co-sponsorship of an advertisement promoting effective health care reform:
"America’s pharmaceutical research and biotechnology companies are committed to helping patients obtain access to the medicines they need to live longer, healthier and more productive lives. For more than 50 years, our companies have offered patient assistance programs that offer free or nearly-free medicines to millions of uninsured and financially struggling patients. While patient assistance programs have played a tremendous role in helping bridge the gap for millions of Americans, we recognize that the programs aren’t the only solution to helping uninsured Americans get access to the health care coverage they need to live healthier lives.
"As part of our continuing commitment to improving the health, quality of life and well-being of American families, PhRMA has banded together with the American Cancer Society, American Medical Association, Families USA, Service Employees International Union and Regence BlueCross BlueShield to sponsor a television ad that iterates the importance of health care reform for all Americans.
“While the benefit of health care reform to millions of currently uninsured Americans is clear, PhRMA and its partners on this endeavor also want to highlight that health care reform would have a positive impact on America’s struggling economy by remedying fast-rising costs and helping patients who have lost health coverage.
“Every person in America would feel the effect of comprehensive health care reform. America’s uninsured and under-insured would have access to quality, affordable health care, while others who are insured would enjoy greater peace of mind because they wouldn’t have to worry about losing their coverage and finding themselves uninsured.
“We also recognize that health care reform is multi-faceted. Because of this, PhRMA also supports initiatives such as the Partnership to Fight Chronic Disease, which helps raise awareness of chronic disease and the policies and practices that save lives and reduce health costs through more effective prevention and management of serious diseases and conditions, which account for seven out of every ten deaths in America.
“Ultimately, we believe that the U.S. health care system – and patient access to health coverage – can only improve if all stakeholders have an open dialogue about the difficult health care challenges confronting America. As this national advertising effort demonstrates, we stand ready to work with other stakeholders who support sound policies that encourage innovation of new therapies and enhanced patient access to medicines."
The Pharmaceutical Research and Manufacturers of America (PhRMA) represents the country’s leading pharmaceutical research and biotechnology companies, which are devoted to inventing medicines that allow patients to live longer, healthier, and more productive lives. PhRMA companies are leading the way in the search for new cures. PhRMA members alone invested an estimated $45.8 billion in 2009 in discovering and developing new medicines. Industry-wide research and investment reached a record $65.3 billion in 2009.
