PhRMA Statement on Inauguration of President Obama

PhRMA January 20, 2009

Washington, D.C. (January 20, 2009) — Pharmaceutical Research and Manufacturers of America (PhRMA) President and CEO Billy Tauzin issued the following statement today regarding the inauguration of President Barack Obama:

“We congratulate President Barack Obama on his historic inauguration and we look forward to working with his Administration on behalf of America’s patients. As our nation’s leaders look ahead to the complexities of health care reform, America’s pharmaceutical research and biotechnology companies – which lead the world in discovering new cures and treatments for patients – welcome the opportunity to help address the difficult health care challenges facing America.

“The commencement of a new Administration and a new Congress will provide all health care stakeholders – including America’s pharmaceutical research companies – with an opportunity to collaborate on ways to work toward meaningful health care reform and to strengthen the health care system in this country.

“As always, we will work with lawmakers on both sides of the aisle and will continue to support policies that encourage and strengthen innovation, improve patient access to medicines and strive to provide affordable, high-quality health care coverage for all Americans.

“As the human and economic costs of chronic diseases – which are the main drivers of health costs in the United States and account for seven out of every ten deaths in America – continue to grow, so too does the need for affordable health insurance.

“That’s why last year, PhRMA unveiled its Platform for a Healthy America, which includes comprehensive and meaningful proposals that aim to assure that all Americans have access to high-quality, affordable health insurance and to improve affordability, value, and quality of care for American patients. The platform supports a dual approach that focuses on expanding private health insurance while improving access to public programs, such as Medicaid and the State Children’s Healthcare Insurance Program.
