PhRMA Supports SU2C's Mission Promoting Cancer Research

PhRMA May 2, 2013

Washington, D.C. (September 9, 2010) – Cancer, the second leading cause of death in the United States, affects more than 10 million Americans. The World Health Organization has suggested that this year, the disease will become the world’s leading cause of death.

That’s why the Pharmaceutical Research and Manufacturers of America (PhRMA) supports Stand Up To Cancer’s (SU2C) mission of promoting and accelerating groundbreaking clinical research into the discovery and development of new medicines to treat cancers.

It’s also why America’s biopharmaceutical research companies are currently studying nearly 900 potential new medicines and vaccines to treat cancer, including 122 for lung cancer (the leading cause of cancer death in the U.S.), 107 for breast cancer, 70 for colorectal cancer, and 103 for prostate cancer.

“The commitment of America’s biopharmaceutical companies to life-saving research – in cancer as well as other life-threatening diseases – gives hope to millions of cancer patients and their loves ones,” said PhRMA Senior Vice President Wes Metheny. “But we can’t do it alone. That’s why we laud Stand Up To Cancer in their mission of supporting research and giving hope to those affected.”

According to recent studies, since 1980, life expectancy for cancer patients has increased by about three years, and 83 percent of those gains are considered attributable to new treatments, including medicines.

Similarly, cancer death rates are down. Advances in treatment have helped speed the pace of improvements in cancer death rates between 1990 and 2006, and much of the improvement came in more recent years: rates fell an average of 1.6 percent per year between 2001 and 2006, compared with a drop of just 0.3 percent from 1990 to 1993.

“We’ve seen tremendous gains in cancer treatment in recent years, and these have had a real effect on the lives of patients worldwide,” said PhRMA’s Metheny. “However, our work continues. We’re glad we share that commitment with inspiring organizations like Stand Up To Cancer. Together, we will aim to meet President Obama’s challenge to cure cancer in our lifetime.”
