An analysis from The Moran Company found nearly one in five hospitals marks up medicine prices 700 percent or more. With this 700 percent markup, a $150 medicine purchased by a hospital could cost patients up to $1,050. Additionally, eight percent of the hospitals included in the study (320 total) marked up some medicine prices more than 1,000 percent. The study was commissioned by PhRMA and looked at total costs and charges for all medicines from 3,792 hospitals using Centers for Medicare and Medicaid Services (CMS) data.
