Closing gaps in the availability of race and ethnicity data is crucial to reducing disparities in health outcomes. Once systemic racism is recognized and highlighted as both the root cause of racial and ethnic health disparities and the reason there is a lack of urgency to do everything possible to eradicate them, efforts around data collection can be refocused and actionable solutions can be implemented throughout the health system.
