Hurricane Sandy Recovery Efforts

Hurricane Sandy Recovery Efforts

11.07.12 | By Preet Bilinski

The northeastern coast of the United States continues to be affected by Hurricane Sandy, which caused extensive damage to cities and rural communities, leaving millions of people without power or homeless. As the east coast recovers in the aftermath of Hurricane Sandy, the biopharmaceutical research industry has committed to making an initial cash and in-kind contribution valued at over 2.6 million dollars. The contributions will support the efforts of community agencies and trusted relief organizations, including the American Red Cross, Save the Children, AmeriCares, among others. Additionally, PhRMA and our member companies are matching employee donations made toward relief efforts.

Furthermore, Rx Response was activated in 11 states and DC to help keep emergency responders informed on the state of the pharmaceutical supply chain. In particular, Rx Response's Pharmacy Status Reporting Tool has generated much positive attention for helping victims and evacuees who need to fill or re-fill their prescription find open pharmacies in the storm's aftermath. Rx Response is also helping emergency responders with critical information on electricity, fuel and transportation issues in the delivery chain.

The Partnership for Prescription Assistance is another resource available for those impacted by Hurricane Sandy. It provides access to more than 475 patient assistance programs - including nearly 200 sponsored by pharmaceutical companies - which provide free or nearly free medicines to patients in need. The PPA member programs offer more than 2,500 brand-name medicines, including a wide range of generics. You can also find information on nearly 10,000 free health care clinics in your communities.

Our thoughts are with the many people who have been affected by Hurricane Sandy and we remain committed to helping the communities recover in the weeks ahead.
