PhRMA Statement on the Health Reform Dialogue

Washington, D.C. (March 27, 2009) — Pharmaceutical Research and Manufacturers of America (PhRMA) President and CEO Billy Tauzin today released the following statement today regarding the Health Reform Dialogue:

“PhRMA’s message throughout the healthcare reform debate is one that has been echoed by many other stakeholders, including the diverse group of organizations participating in the Health Reform Dialogue (HRD): all Americans should be able to access high-quality and affordable healthcare coverage.

“PhRMA has been pleased to contribute to an honest, constructive dialogue about ways we can address weaknesses in our healthcare system and also find ways to build on our many great healthcare strengths. The HRD agreement points toward ways to achieve this goal.

“PhRMA – along with the other 17 organizations participating in the HRD process – were able to find common ground on key policy areas – something that many thought would be impossible. This marks an historic achievement and an important step forward in helping get a comprehensive healthcare reform package on the President’s desk this year. “It’s widely recognized that the health reform process thus far has been built on the promise of bipartisanship so that we can build consensus around ideas that can help assure that all Americans can access high-quality and affordable healthcare coverage. To help keep the bipartisanship spirit alive and also help Congress achieve a final product that the American people are collectively supportive of, the House and Senate should seek healthcare reform through regular order.

“Clearly, there is a lot of work that needs to be done to help ensure that a bipartisan healthcare reform package moves forward this year. But if we all continue to work together and have constructive dialogue to help find common ground, this can surely happen.”
