What to Read: How User Fees Can Help Patients

Yesterday, The Hill's Congress Blog ran a column by Nicole Boice, founder and CEO of the Children's Rare Disease Network, about how the Prescription Drug User Fee Act (PDUFA) has helped to bring orphan medicines to pediatric patients.

Boice opines that "on the whole, PDUFA works well and the FDA, along with pharmaceutical companies, is bringing hope and needed relief to millions of patients and their families, in the form of new treatment options."
Now, as PDUFA moves toward reauthorization next year, Boice calls for enhanced communication between biopharmaceutical research companies and their regulators at the FDA in order to ensure a consistent and efficient review process that advances public health.
We couldn't agree more.
